How does an observation about an object differ from an inference about that object?

pleeasee heelpp(:How does an observation about an object differ from an inference about that object?
If I were to guess, an observation would be the eye viewing the tangible object, and the inference would be the minds eye conjuring up a vision of the object from memory. I believe the brain cannot distinguish the difference.
